4. SHARE AN ASSISTANT WITH A COWORKER OR COLLEAGUE WHOSE VALUES YOU SHARE.

When you don’t have the means to hire an assistant by yourself, why not go in with a coworker or colleague whom you trust and respect? If you share an assistant with a coworker, you cut the cost in half, and you share the training responsibility. This is obviously the best scenario because your assistant always remains in the same place. But if you don’t have a coworker with whom you’d feel comfortable sharing an assistant, hire one with a trusted colleague at a nearby office or in another field altogether. A top-quality assistant may enjoy the regular change of environment and pace. If you go this route, it’s important that you not tie your assistant’s hands. When training a newly hired assistant, always allow for innovation and suggestions for improvement. The fact is that a great assistant will often be able to figure out more productive and creative methods for completing tasks—and your job is always to support that, not squash it.
